How long have you been in business?

Jiffy Steamer traces its roots back to 1940. Gone with the Wind was the movie and Frank Sinatra, the voice. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was preparing to run for a third term. Most everyone of that era wore a hat. Stretching, shaping and blocking your fedora over a steaming kettle was common. This is where the idea was born – a better way to steam hats “back into shape in a jiffy.” Shortly after 1940, the company was organized and the Jiffy Steamer Model J-1 was patented. Jiffy Steamer knew the invention was good for more than steaming hats, so a hose attachment and steam head were added. The new Jiffy Steamer offered a revolutionary solution to an age-old problem of the clothing industry…removing wrinkles efficiently. Today, three generations are involved in this closely held company. Jiffy Steamer Company, LLC is known around the globe (over 55 foreign markets) and is backed by over 1,000 dealers in the United States alone. The dozens of Jiffy Steamer models can be found almost everywhere-from the commercial garment trade, to residential markets, in the pages of high-end mail order catalogs, in businesses that cater to the travel industry as well as in other specialty markets. The history of the Jiffy Steamer is filled with the promise and desire to harness the power and magic of steam.

My SteamBlade is spitting water from the hose. What is causing this?

There are several common errors that can cause your steamer to emit water or spit while steaming. If you are experiencing trouble with your steamer emitting water, please review the following five items.

1. Too much water in the tank
Check the water level in your tank to make sure that it contains no more than 4 quarts (3.79 liters) maximum. Overfilling the water tank can prevent your steamer from working properly.

2. Steaming in a low position
When steaming in a low position you should periodically raise and straighten out your hose. Not doing so can cause condensation accumulation and will create a gurgling noise. Periodically raising and straightening the hose will allow condensation to flow back into the water tank.

3. Stale water
Always keep fresh water in the reservoir. After a period of about one week water becomes stale and should be replaced with fresh water. Steaming with stale water can also cause a foaming action. If this occurs you should rinse your water tank thoroughly and refill with fresh water. Jiffy Steamer has a 3 pack liquid cleaner available for $18.00 plus shipping. We recommend that the liquid cleaner be used once every 6-12 months to remove sediment and mineral deposit build up. This build up can result from using hard water.

4. Rod set is not fully extended
Be sure to keep your rod set fully extended. Not doing so can cause condensation to collect and create gurgling sounds. Extending the rod set fully keeps the hose in an upright position allowing condensation to flow back into the tank.

5. Hose too long
In some cases, a customer has purchased a hose that is too long for the task at hand. For example, you would not want to purchase a 7 ½ foot drapery hose to simply steam clothing. You would not be able to fully raise the hose which could cause condensation to accumulate and the potential emission of water.

6. Cracked or broken steam head and / or handle
Check to ensure that your steam head and / or handle are not broken or that it contains cracks which could potentially cause leakage. You may order a replacement steam head kit or a head and hose attachment complete from our Accessories section.

Most spitting problems are caused by user error and are not manufacturing defects. After checking the 6 items listed above, and your steamer is still emitting water, please conduct this simple test. Turn your steamer off and allow it to cool. Remove your hose from the steamer with an adjustable wrench. Turn your steamer back on and check the flow of steam. If you have a steady stream of steam, your steamer is functioning properly and the problem is in the hose attachment. If you continue to experience difficulty with your steamer, please call our repair department at 1-800-525-4339. Jiffy Steamer’s trained technicians will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

How often should I change the water?

Always keep fresh water in the reservoir. After a period of about one week water becomes stale and should be replaced with fresh water. Steaming with stale water can cause a foaming action. If this occurs, you should rinse your water tank thoroughly and refill with fresh water. Jiffy Steamer has a 3 pack liquid cleaner available for $18.00 plus shipping. We recommend that the liquid cleaner be used once every 6-12 months to remove sediment and mineral deposit build up. This build up can result from using hard water.

Do I have to use distilled water?

No, plain tap water may be used in the SteamBlade. Periodically, pour the old water out of the steamer to avoid sediment buildup.

How do I maintain optimal performance with my SteamBlade?

Clean and rinse your steamer regularly: All steamers need to be cleaned and rinsed on occasion to flush the mineral deposits. We recommend our Jiffy Steamer Liquid Cleaner for cleaning internal parts.

Never use additives: Additives such as salt, perfumes, and dyes should never be added to your steamer water. These substances will corrode or plug internal parts.

Never overfill your steamer: If you have purchased the J-4000 series SteamBlade, never add more than one gallon of water to the reservoir.

Never allow your steamer to run dry: Running a steamer dry will cause internal damage to the heating element and wiring.

Never pour cold water into a hot steamer: If by mistake your steamer has run dry of water, allow the unit to cool before adding water. Cold water on top of a hot heating element can cause damage to the element.

Steam in a vertical, upright position: Do not use your steamer in a horizontal position like an iron. Steam in a vertical up and down motion. This will allow the condensation in the hose to flow back into the steamer.

Secure your hose nut tightly: If your steamer has a hose attachment, make sure the brass nut is fastened tight to the base of the steamer. A loose nut will allow water to run down the front of your unit.

Never use an extension cord: Extension cords should not be used on this product. Adding an extension cord may create damage to the steamer’s power cord and internal wiring.

Do not pull steamer by the power cord: Pulling the steamer by the power cord may cause the internal wiring to become loose.

Never use your foot to turn steamer on/off: Damage may occur to the switch should you turn the unit off using excess pressure with your foot.

Storing the steamer: Before storing the steamer for an extended period (30 days or more), empty all water from the unit. Stale water becomes thick with time and may plug internal parts

What maintenance should be performed on my SteamBlade?

Cleaning Instructions for J-4000 SteamBlade

The cleaning procedure below is recommended as a regular maintenance measure to help your steamer maintain its maximum steaming performance. This maintenance should be performed on a basis of every 3-6 months depending on your water supply. In most cases, a steamer that is severely clogged will require disassembly to properly clean and prolong the life span of the unit. An authorized repair center or a Jiffy Steamer service technician best performs this disassembly.

1. Remove hose attachment from unit at the brass coupling using a wrench. Pour out any remaining water from your unit.

2. If the hose attachment is blocked by sediment build-up, use a water hose to clean inside the hose. This should loosen and remove any build-up that may have occurred within the hose itself.

3. To clean the internal parts of your steamer, use of the Jiffy Liquid Cleaner (10 ounce bottle) is recommended. This acid-based cleaner will remove hard water deposits and sediment build-up. This cleaner is not available for export.

4. Fill your steamer with 1 gallon of water and add the entire ten (10) ounce bottle of Jiffy Steamer Liquid Cleaner. Turn the steamer to PREHEAT and allow water and solution to warm.

5. When the red pilot light turns off, indicating the end of the PREHEAT cycle, turn the switch to OFF and unplug the steamer from the wall outlet. Allow the water and cleaning solution to remain in the steamer for 2-3 hours. DO NOT STEAM THE SOLUTION IN THE UNIT AS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.

6. Pour the cleaning solution out of the steamer. Do this by tipping the steamer over and pouring the solution out of the brass fitting where your hose attachment normally connects.

7. Rinse the unit thoroughly by flushing with fresh water 2 to 3 times.

8. If discolored water or residue continues to come from the unit, the above procedure may need to be repeated.

9. Please call 1-800-525-4339 for further instructions or questions.
